Sydney, 13th June 2014: Truphone, the mobile network without borders, announced it has become the official global supplier for mobile voice and data services of the Volvo Ocean Race, the toughest professional sailing race in the world.
Truphone will provide global mobile voice and data services to employees of the Volvo Ocean Race for 36 months. The race spans 38,739 nautical miles, 11 countries and five oceans, starting in Alicante, Spain on October 4, 2014 and ending in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 27, 2015.
By switching to Truphone, the Volvo Ocean Race will now receive higher speed international data, clearer international calls, and best in class customer service. The team has selected a large inclusive international bundle of voice, text and data which can be shared across their user base, so their employees can use their mobile devices in 66 countries in exactly the same way as they do at home.
At the core of this group of 66 nations is an area of eight key countries called the Truphone Zone. Here, users can get up to eight international numbers on a single SIM card, so their contacts can reach them on a local number and at local rates, wherever they are in the world. It is no longer necessary for the Volvo Ocean Race employees to carry two mobile phones, one personal and one local, with them, or to switch to local SIM cards every time they get to a port – an issue that has troubled them in past Race editions.
The Race stopovers included within the flat rate tariff are Alicante (Spain), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajaà (Brazil), Newport (Rhode Island, USA), Lisbon (Portugal), Lorient (France), a pit stop at The Hague (The Netherlands) and, finally, Gothenburg (Sweden).
This will be the 12th running of an event first held in 1973 when it was launched as the Whitbread Round the World Race. It is one of the three major events in sailing, together with the Olympics and the America's Cup. It is held every three years and has established a reputation as the most testing offshore event on the calendar.
The upcoming 2014-15 edition will place more emphasis on the seamanship of the sailors than ever before, following a decision to have all the teams compete in boats with an identical design, the 'Volvo Ocean 65'.
Knut Frostad, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, said: We have employees travelling around the world and providers spread across five continents. It is crucial that we are always connected - 24 hours a day, without surprises, with seamless communications, with the best voice quality and high speed data. In this new edition, we can count on a single partner in Truphone capable of providing extreme mobility of the kind we need around the world."
Jordi Neves, Technical Director of the Volvo Ocean Race, said: "The global operation behind organizing the Volvo Ocean Race faces many communications challenges. We have selected Truphone for their innovative service and support of our mobility challenges. We always wanted to have a mobile phone with multiple international numbers sharing a common voice and data plan. Truphone is not just delivering this solution but also a remarkable cost saving and support team devoted to our needs, wherever we are."
Steve Robertson, CEO of Truphone, said: "We are proud to have been chosen as the Official Supplier of Mobile Communications for The Volvo Ocean Race. It's a truly global event that embodies the spirit of passion for innovation and performance - values which are deeply embedded in Truphone's DNA.
He continued, "The Race pushes people to the extreme limit of their skills, their emotions and their endurance. We're thrilled to be a part of the team - providing the global mobile network that enables the Volvo Ocean Race employees to share these experiences with the people that matter most."
About Truphone
Truphone is the only mobile operator in the world without country borders. It brings people closer to their international contacts, makes them more productive, and gives them the international quality of service they deserve.
One of the ways that Truphone achieves this is by providing people within a group of eight countries, called the Truphone Zone, multiple international mobile numbers on a patented Truphone SIM card. This means that people's international contacts can always reach them, and make high quality local calls at a local rate.
The Truphone Zone includes Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, USA and the UK. The Truphone Zone is at the heart of a group of 66 countries called Truphone World. Here, people can talk, text and download, just as they do at home, with bundles of voice, text and high speed data that work across the entire footprint.
The Truphone World countries account for 70 per cent of all international travel routes, including all of Europe and key business destinations in North America, South America, Asia and Oceania. Globally, Truphone serves people in more than 200 countries, with regional bundles that provide predictable costs and higher quality network performance. Truphone's unique GSM network enables it to provide 24/7 multi-language support and proactive monitoring of network performance to deliver a seamless and consistent international mobile experience. Headquartered in London, Truphone has 13 offices across four continents and continues to expand globally. Clients include FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies across multiple sectors.
