The doctor will see you now, virtually

Patients are asked to complete a questionnaire on the Doctus web site (www.doctus.com.au). This is reviewed by Doctus' Australian registered doctors. If a prescription is recommended medication can be delivered or the patient can opt to receive a paper prescription in the mail and pick up the medication from a pharmacy.

Diagnoses are partly automated. Doctus says it uses computer-assisted diagnosis to "create efficiency in determining cause and treatment for patients, directly linking them with a range of pharmaceutical products that aren't considered dangerous."

Doctus says it will never prescribe medications like narcotics (as in morphine and other derivatives) or benzodiazepines (Valium).

Doctus' founders are GP Dr Rodney Beckwith and his daughter, Sarah Beckwith. According to Dr Beckwith, "Doctus saves our patients money – no co-payment, no gap, no petrol, no parking costs, and no time off work. At the same time, every Doctus consultation saves the healthcare system money because we are not Medicare eligible."

Beckwith says that Doctus is not designed to completely eliminate the traditional GP visit. "We are traditional GPs ourselves and we see patients every day in normal practice settings. If you need a top-up of an uncomplicated medication you can use the Doctus service to tide you over."

Dr Beckwith says Doctus is suitable for 'simple medical conditions' such as contraception, digestion, erectile dysfunction, gout, STDs-chlamydia, prostate, asthma and emphysema, blood pressure, osteoporosis and cholesterol, but is not suitable for people with complex illnesses like diabetes, chronic pain, or severe psychiatric conditions like bipolar disease.

He suggests that, in some aspects, other than simply lower cost and convenience, the service may be superior to face-to-face consultation. "Our patients really appreciate the discretion of the Doctus service. Embarrassment can prevent people from seeking medical treatment. If you don't want to speak to someone face-to-face, Doctus provides a confidential and secure online service including discreet packaging for product delivery."
